Regional Tournament

The regional finals for Northeastern Kansas were held at Village Greens Country Club in Ozawkie, KS on Monday, May 16. The narrow fairways and water hazards took their toll on the Varsity Wamego Golf Team. They fought through the challenges to finish strong. Austin Waters was able to chip in for birdie on the par 3 16th, while Dane Stewart parred the par 5 17th even after going into the drink. Scrambling to score when things just aren't going your way is tough to do. Just like when things go wrong in life, it's easier to just give up. These guys didn't do that and that is why I'm proud of them. Wamego place 7th at regionals with a team score of 430. Sophomore, Luke Hannan had the team best on Monday of 103.

Individual Results show:
Luke Hannan 103
Braylon Simonson 106
Mason Stewart 109
Dane Stewart 112
Austin Waters 114
Trevor Lindley 120

NCKL Tournament

The Wamego Golf Team took another positive step toward a bright future at the NCKL tournament in Concordia (par 68) on May 10th. The team was able to shave 40 strokes from their team best 360. It is a testament to their effort on the practice greens, along with a great effort from the two freshman Dane Stewart and Trevor Lindley who both shot an 89 on Monday. Everyone was able to break the 100 mark for the first time this year which landed the team 4th place in the league. Results are as follows:

Dane Stewart 89
Trevor Lindley 89
Mason Stewart 97
Austin Waters 92
Luke Hannan 90
Braylon Simonson 96

Marysville Invitational

Another young player has made a splash on the Wamego Varsity Golf Team. Freshman Trevor Lindley was able to scratch his way into the top six last week in order to get a chance to compete in Marysville on May 3. Trevor was able to pull in a 103 for his first tournament. "I didn't feel like I played very well," Trevor commented, "but at least I parred the last hole so I could end on a positive note." Overall, the team played consistent on Tuesday, but not well enough to place. "It's a nice course," said coach Michael Petermann, "but we had some trouble staying out of the trees. That will eventually take you out of contention." May 9th is the NCKL tournament in Concordia for the WHS golf team, and Regionals will be held in Topeka at the Village Greens Golf Course on Monday the 16th. "Hopefully we can hit 'em straight enough to make it to state!" See the results tab above.

St. Mary's Invitational

Junior Mason Stewart and Sophomore Luke Hannan made huge strides last Tuesday April 26, moving up in their seeding on the Wamego Varsity Golf team. At Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Junction City, Mason Stewart penned a season low 95. With that showing, he moved into 1st position on the team for the tournament in Clay Center, with his brother Dane, as well as Austin Waters, right behind. Mason has scored well in scrimmage rounds, but struggled during competition days; it was good to see him score closer to what he does in practice. I won't be surprised if he shoots in the 80s in the next few weeks. Securing the fourth slot on the team is Luke Hannan. Luke shot a personal best 98 on Tuesday, made possible with his award winning longest put on the 18th green. "It was over 28 feet!" Luke said, "It would have been nice to win a putter or some pro v1 golf balls, but a medal is cool too."

Electronic scores are unavailable

Mason Stewart 95
Dane Stewart 97
Luke Hannan 98
Braylon Simonsen 98
Nick Webb 101
Austin Waters 109

Abilene Invitational

The Wamego two man team of Sophomore Austin Waters and Freshman Dane Stewart paired up to tie for second in the two man event on Tuesday, April 19th in Abilene! Losing a tie breaker and settling for third didn't seem to dampen their spirits. "I figured we put together a good round eventually," commented Waters, "even if Dane is just a freshman, he can play pretty good." Dane continues to show promise in his tenure on the Golf team, and hopes he can sustain it over the long haul. "I'll practice in a hurricane if I have to!" he texted at one point. With the weather these guys have had to face lately, that may not be a bad idea. The temperature never made if over 55, and the wind chill seem barely touched 50. For Austin and Dane, the mercury didn't matter, since they are warmed with the fact that they've earned their letter for the year.

Chapman Invitational

The Wamego Golf Team took a giant step forward last week at the Chapman Invitational on April 12th. Every player improved on their score from the Wamego Invitational on April 5th. One student in particular that made great gains was Freshman Dane Stewart. He cut is score by 18 to bring in a 95 on Tuesday, giving him the number 2 seed on the team going into the tournament in Abilene on April 19th. Coach Petermann attributes the growth to his commitment to stay on the course after practice to become more comfortable with his swing while also thinking more about playing the course than the person he is paired with. Overall, the 4 man total was good enough for 4th place at 394, a drop of 71 strokes from the week prior. Hopefully, we can keep building on this momentum.

Austin Waters 93
Dane Stewart 95
Mason Stewart 101
Luke Hannan 105

Nick Webb 112
