Ryan Helus aligns his eyes with his putter.  He would go up and down with this 14 footer for par on the par 4 4th in Clay Center.

Paul Hartwich tees off on # 1

A new group of Raiders took the course on Thursday.  With several players contending for the 5 and 6 slots, ranging from freshman to junior, Coach Petermann has decided to give several gentlemen a taste of a Varsity tournament.  Ryan Helus, a regular on Varsity, shot a personal best (80) as the unofficial captain of the High School Golf Team.  Sophomore Trevor Lindley, no stranger to varsity competition, played in his first varsity meet in 3 weeks and penciled a respectable (100).  Vance Lacey, the freshman with potential, competed in his 3rd straight Varsity meet with a (88).  Sophomore Kyle Mueller and Junior Paul Hartwich saw varsity talent for the first time this year and shot a (98) and a (105) respectively.  Overall, the team placed (4th) in the two man, (4th) in the 4-man, and (4th) in the 6-man.

Red Raiders take 5th in Junction City

Left:  Dane Stewart tees off on #11 at Rolling Hills in Junction City

Red Raiders placed 5th today against new and tougher competition at the St. Mary's Invite in Junction City at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.  This heavily wooded 18-hole course hosted 11 teams, including regional powerhouses Jeff West, Holton, and Sabetha.  The trees caused some problems but a new face has pushed his way into the forefront.  A self-proclaimed Rolling Meadow Rugrat, Nick Webb, shot a personal best 84 placing 18th in the tourney.  He claims he grew up on the course and took advantage of his knowledge to score on several holes.  Ryan Helus shot an 89, the only Red Raider to shoot 90 or below in all tournaments this spring.  Continuing to improve and shine is Freshman Vance Lacey who (after birdieing the par 3 16th to end the round) tied for 3rd for Wamego with steady Sophomore Dane Stewart who also shot a 91.  Austin Waters (97) got into trouble in the first 4 holes but scrambled together a strong back 9.  Senior Mason Stewart has been able to keep things going and rallied late for a 101.

JV Takes Top Spot at St. Mary's

Sophomore Trevor Lindley (43) took the gold in St. Mary's on Monday while Junior Luke Hannan (44) placed 3rd. Kyle Wilson (52) also medaled in 14th place. Matt Roudybush (53) lost a playoff for 15th, thus placing 16th. Paul Hartwich was right behind with a 55. Overall, the raiders won the 2-man competition and hope to finish strong next week in Chapman and the following week at JV NCKL. I'm having a tough time uploading pictures and will do so as soon as I can make it work!

Abilene Golf Tournament 4/17/12

Junior Mason Stewart warms up for his second shot on the par 5 4th in Abilene.

The Red Raiders faced off in Abilene on Tuesday, and again placed third behind their continual dual nemesis of Abilene and Concordia. On this 9 hole course, they played the whites on the first 9, and the blues on the back 9. The extra distance didn't affect Juniors Ryan Helus {who finished 7th} (86) and Nick Webb (92). Ryan shot a 44 front and 42 back, while Nick dropped 49 then improved 7 strokes with a 42. Austin Waters (94) also bettered his front 9 score, 48 and 46 respectively. Freshman Vance Lacey (100)competed in his first Varsity event, and was able to shoot a 46 on the back 9. Mason Stewart struggled with the par 5s, but salvaged a 101. Sophomore Dane Stewart shot a 45 and 44 to finish with an 89, second best for the team.

2012 Wamego Invitational

The Red Raider Golf team set a strong precedent this past Tuesday at their home golf meet. The two man squad took first with Juniors Ryan Helus and Austin Waters. Helus was injured all last year and his presence this year has been a great boost to the team; he shot a team low and personal best 85. Austin Waters continues to be a cornerstone for the team as he posted an 88, good enough for a medal. Also, sophomore Dane Stewart showed his off-season work ethic by dropping an 86…more than 20 strokes better than last year. With this steady improvement, the Red Raiders are poised to keep taking hardware from each tournament they enter.
