A bitter-sweet end to the WHS Golf 6-man season culminated in Macpherson, Kansas on May 13th. On the positive side, two freshmen have qualified for the state tournament! Ryan Elder (77) shot +2 on the back to secure a 4-way tie for 4th. Parker Waters (79) pushed through a string of early bogeys to tie for 8th. The 4-man score (339) placed the team 4th behind Abilene (337), Buhler (311), and Hesston (310). Senior Ryan Helus (93) was hoping to repeat as a state qualifier, but a string of tough holes on the back 9 ended those dreams. He had a great career and Coach Petermann stated, “He was the backbone of our team for 3 years. A lot of our success is due to him.” Junior Dane Stewart (90) was hoping for his first state qualification, but his +15 front 9 was too much to overcome. Junior Trevor Lindley (97) and Sophomore Vance Lacey (106) played in their second regional qualifier, but are now looking forward to next year’s possibilities. It wasn’t the finish the team was hoping for, but the team did achieve the rest of their goals for the spring. They won 3 tournaments, including the NCKL championship.

Wamego JV Meet
Despite Northwest wind that cooled the recently hot JV Red Raiders today, they were still able to take the 1st place medals for the 2-man (102). After a strong showing in Sabetha and Clay Center, no one was able to break 50 today. Hayden Wolf (6th), shot just that. Kyle Mueller (10th) shot a 52, and broke a tie with his teammates Luke Hannan (11th) and Matt Roudybush (12th) by shooting a 5 on the par 4 8th. Fortunately, the wind hampered scores for other teams as well. Manhattan High, a 6A opponent, shot a 103 in the 2-man (2nd) and a 190 in the 4-man (1st). Abilene placed 2nd in the 4-man with a 213. Wamego's 4-man placed 3rd with a 232. Check the tab above for the full results.

Wamego Invitational
Junior Matt Roudybush putts for par on the par 4 #1 |
It was an amazing day at Wamego Golf Course on Tuesday,
April 2nd. Freshman Ryan
Elder (72) and Parker Waters (76) placed 1st and 2nd
respectively in their first Varsity golf meet.
Junior Dane Stewart (86) was able to place in the top 10. There superb efforts elevated Wamego to first
in the 2 man pairing, and 3rd in the 4-man pairing. Wamego also placed 1st in the 6
man event. All scorers shot under 100
for the Red Raiders: Seniors Ryan Helus
(90), Nick Webb (96), and Austin Waters (99).
When taking the top 4 scores, which is how it will be scored for NCKL Championships and Regionals,
Wamego topped all other teams by over 20 strokes. “I still left a lot out on the course,” said
Freshman Ryan Elder, “I lipped out 3 birdie putts.” After shotgun starting on
#15, Dane Stewart was able to right the ship despite double bogeying the par 5
#16 and par 4 #18 by shooting just above par golf the rest of the way. Senior
Ryan Helus wasn’t happy with his performance but knows it will come together
eventually, “I was able to putt really
well…I just need to straighten out my tee-shots.” Coach Petermann noted, “The
team competed today with only a handful of official practices. The weather has kept the course closed for
much of the pre-season, so the scores should continue to drop. Keep an eye out for this squad, they aren’t
going anywhere but up.”

Hopes are high as Wamego High School has dominated the NCKL in almost every offered sport and activity in the 2012-2013 season. The awaited influx of talented freshman Ryan Elder and Parker Waters stir up similar expectations of this year's Varsity Golf Team. With returning Senior and State Qualifer Ryan Helus as well as two-year Varsity letter winners Austin Waters and Dane Stewart, the Red Raiders are heavily favored to win NCKL. 3 year Varsity members Senior Nick Webb and Senior Braylon Simonsson along with newcomer Senior Hayden Wolf are all strong scorers with potential to medal at any meet. It was just two years ago that this team, with no Seniors and only one Junior began rebuilding and refocusing for an opportunity such as this. The team will host 3 regular season meets this year, and is slotted as a frontrunner for hosting a 4a Regional Tournament. Click on the tab above to download a schedule.
